Nevada Highway Patrol said a U.S. Airforce service man was killed in a Las Vegas area freeway crash last Monday afternoon.

The fatality was identified as 23-year-old Derek Weston Moore, a senior airman who worked as an electro environmental systems journeyman stationed at Nellis Air Force Base and who lived in North Las Vegas. Moore was assigned to the 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

According to investigators, Moore crashed his 2003 Suzuki motorcycle a little after 3 a.m. last Monday on the northern 215 Beltway west of Pecos Road. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed by authorities. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott says Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.

A memorial service was held 3 p.m. Friday at the chapel on the Las Vegas-area air base for Moore

In related news, Reno police are mourning the loss of a veteran fellow officer who died from critical injuries he suffered in a motorcycle wreck in Idaho two weeks ago. Based on reports from the Idaho police, Scott Heglar, 30, was riding with friends on Interstate 84 in Idaho’s Canyon County when he was rear-ended in a four-vehicle crash on July 11. He had been on life support since then and died Saturday at a hospital in Boise. Plans for his service are still pending.
